Grinding often happens during sleep, so many people notice the effects first.

This guide covers the signs, the causes, your options and what to expect at your visit. For a quick summary, see our night guard page.

What is teeth grinding (bruxism)?

Bruxism is the medical name for grinding or clenching your teeth. It can happen during sleep or during the day, often when you are stressed or concentrating.

Occasional clenching is common. When it happens often, it can wear your teeth down and leave your jaw muscles tired.

What are the signs that I grind my teeth at night?

Grinding usually happens while you sleep, so you tend to notice the effects rather than the grinding itself. Common signs include:

  • A sore, tight or tired jaw when you wake up

  • Morning headaches, especially around the temples

  • Teeth that look flatter, shorter or chipped at the edges

  • Teeth that feel more sensitive than before

  • A partner hearing grinding noises at night

  • Catching yourself clenching during the day

These signs can have other causes too. Sensitivity, for example, has several possible reasons, which we explain in our guide to tooth sensitivity causes and solutions. A dental check is the easiest way to know for sure.

What causes teeth grinding?

There is often no single cause. Grinding is commonly linked with stress, poor sleep, caffeine, alcohol, smoking and the way your teeth bite together.

Some medications and sleep conditions can also play a part. If you snore heavily or wake up tired after a full night's sleep, tell your dentist. They may suggest you see a doctor as well.

Can teeth grinding cause jaw pain?

It can contribute. Clenching puts extra load on your jaw muscles and jaw joints (TMJ), so some people notice pain, clicking or stiffness.

Jaw pain has many possible causes, though. If your jaw hurts, clicks, locks or is hard to open, see a dentist so it can be properly assessed. Pain that is worse at night can also come from a tooth, which we cover in why a tooth hurts only at night.

How is teeth grinding managed?

A dental check comes first. Your dentist looks at the wear on your teeth, your jaw muscles and your bite, then talks you through options such as:

  • A custom night guard to protect your teeth while you sleep

  • Looking at triggers, such as stress, sleep, caffeine or alcohol

  • Repairing damage, such as chipped or worn teeth, where needed

  • Referral to a doctor if a sleep or breathing problem is suspected

  • Jaw (masseter) injections for some people who clench heavily (see below)

Does a night guard stop teeth grinding?

Not necessarily. A night guard protects your teeth rather than curing the habit.

It sits between your upper and lower teeth, so the guard takes the wear instead of your enamel. Your dentist can talk you through what may be behind your grinding.

Hard or soft: which night guard is right for me?

We offer both, and your dentist will recommend one based on your teeth and what feels comfortable:

  • Hard night guards are firmer and are often suggested for heavier grinders.

  • Soft night guards feel more cushioned, and some people find them easier to get used to.

Is a custom guard better than a pharmacy mouth guard?

Pharmacy mouth guards are cheaper and quick to buy, but they are made to fit many mouths, not yours. They can feel bulky or move around, so some people stop wearing them.

A custom night guard is made from a mould of your own teeth, so it fits closely and is designed for sleeping in. A sports mouthguard is a different product, built to protect against knocks during sport.

Night guard KL cost: how much is it?

  • Your custom night guard, hard or soft

Your dentist will tell you whether you need one arch or both. You can compare other treatments on our fees page or in our 2026 dental cost guide for Kuala Lumpur.

Are jaw (masseter) injections an option for grinding?

Some people who clench heavily ask about jaw injections. At Teethos, Dr Lynn Tung Li Ying offers masseter injections, where a small amount of botulinum toxin is placed in the large chewing muscle at the side of your jaw. This relaxes the muscle and may reduce how hard you clench.

  • It is temporary. The effect wears off gradually and varies from person to person.

  • It can be used alongside a night guard. The injection works on the muscle, while the guard protects your teeth.

  • It is not right for everyone. Dr Lynn assesses you at a consultation first.

  • Price: RM1,500 with a Korean brand, or RM2,500 with Allergan (US).
